The Ultimate Writing Tracker for Scrivener

The Ultimate Writing Tracker for Scrivener

Auto-Tracking

Tired of having to input your word count, start time, and end time into your writing tracker after each session? Forget about it!

This app will automatically detect when you start your session, when you pause, and when you finish. All you have to do is keep the application open (even minimized), and boom! Never forget to log a session again.

NEW Weekly Summaries

Visualize your progress throughout the week, and set specific goals for time, word count, or writing speed.

Setting weekly goals is what helped me finished my first novel, and if it worked for me, it might work for you too! Besides, who doesn't like seeing colourful bar charts spring up when they write? Visuals like these are excellent for sharing your progress, whether that's friends, family, or other writers who promised to keep you accountable to your goals.

Editing Mode

When you finish the first draft, the work doesn't stop, so neither should your tracking.

When you toggle on Editing Mode, the app will no longer track your word count changes; only your time spent in Scrivener. This means you can track your editing sessions without disrupting your word count or writing speed averages.

NEW Statistics

Curious about your stats as a writer?

The Statistics page displays some fun and useful information about your writing activity. How much time do you spend writing vs. editing? What's your highest-ever streak? How does your activity look on a heat map?

 . . . and more!

  • Detailed Session History
  • Daily History (calendar and list views)
  • Projects list
  • Project details

Project Goals

If you're anything like me, you're not writing aimlessly; you've got big projects you're working hard at.

In this app, you can set a specific word count goal for your project and watch the progress bar fill after each session. Additionally, you can keep track of all writing sessions associated with that particular project, upload a placeholder cover image, and keep the file location up-to-date!

How to Get Started

*Screenshots are from Version 1 of the app, but are still applicable!

To start off, you'll need to create a project. Go to the Projects tab on the sidebar, then press the "+" icon in the top right corner. Once you've entered your project title and word count goal, press Add.

You will also be prompted to add a cover image, but that's entirely optional.

Next, click on the project you created. You'll find a button that says "Assign Scrivener Project". Once you click on that, you need to navigate to the Scrivener project file (ending in .scriv), then select it.

If it works, you should see the progress bar fill a little (assuming the Scrivener file isn't empty).

Now it's time to calibrate your project! This step ensures that even if there are some extra text files in your Scrivener project, the app only counts your manuscript's length.

In the top right, you'll find a sliders icon. Click it, then enter your project's accurate word count. If the word count ever feels wrong in the future, simply recalibrate the project and you're good to go!

Finally, click the button on the sidebar that says "Active Project", then select the project you've just created.

Congratulations! Writing Tracker for Scrivener will now automatically log your writing sessions for the active project. Just one more thing before you start tracking sessions . . .

In Scrivener, go to Settings (⌘,) and select Saving from the sidebar. Make sure the autosave frequency is set to 1.

Since the tracker can only detect changes when the file is saved, this will increase the accuracy of session tracking.

With that, you're good to go!

FAQ

Yes, Writing Tracker for Scrivener is a MacOS exclusive. There are no plans to port it to another operating system, but that may change in the future.

Presently, yes. Due to how frequently Scrivener auto-saves, it is the only major writing application that is compatible with this writing tracker's file-reading system.

Yes! I hope to implement a few new features in the future, but I don't have an exact timeline. Some of these features include:

  • Weekly/Monthly Summaries
  • Goal Tracking (perhaps I'll do some more work here)
  • Notifications
  • Data exporting (for premium users)

Aside from two features, the entire app is free!

You won't be prompted to pay for using the app's core features, but if you want the ability to manually create/edit sessions and track multiple projects, there is the option to pay for a premium licence.

A premium subscription costs $2.99/month or $19.99/year.

Trying to become financially stable as a writer is daunting, and I'm trying to find creative ways to achieve that dream.

That said, I tried to make the app inexpensive, and I left all the core functionality in the free version!
